Player Prop vs Game Prop
Player props bet on an individual's stats; game props bet on an event or characteristic of the contest itself, not tied to one player or the final score.
A player prop is a wager on something one athlete does in a game — passing yards, rebounds, strikeouts, shots on goal — measured against a number the sportsbook sets, independent of who wins. A game prop is a wager on a characteristic of the contest as a whole that isn’t the standard side, total, or moneyline — will the game go to overtime, will either team score in the first five minutes, will the combined score be odd or even. Neither category cares about final score the way a spread bet does; that’s what separates both from “game lines.” What separates them from each other is the unit of measurement: one player’s box score versus the game’s shape.
The practical difference shows up in what actually moves the number. A player prop lives and dies on usage, role, matchup, and game script — a running back can rush for 110 yards in a 35-point loss if the opponent can’t stop the run, and that prop still cashes even though the team side didn’t. A game prop lives and dies on how the whole event unfolds — pace, weather, coaching decisions, two bad bullpens in extra innings — and no single player’s stat line determines it. You’re not betting on Player X’s night, you’re betting on the game’s personality.
This matters for correlation. A player prop and a game prop from the same contest can be linked in ways that aren’t obvious. If you bet “Josh Allen over 2.5 passing touchdowns” and also “this game goes to overtime,” those two outcomes actually work against each other in a subtle way — a game with 3+ passing touchdowns for one QB by garbage time often isn’t close enough to need overtime. Sportsbooks know this and restrict or short-price same-game parlays that combine correlated legs for exactly this reason.

Take a Sunday night Bills–Chiefs matchup. Two bets, placed separately, on the same game.
Player prop: Travis Kelce Over 5.5 receptions, priced at -120. To win $100 you risk $120. You bet $120.
- If Kelce catches 6 or more passes, you win $100 profit, total return $220.
- It doesn’t matter if the Chiefs win by 20 or lose by 20 — the bet only tracks Kelce’s catch count.
Game prop: “Will this game go to overtime?” priced at Yes +650. A $20 bet risks $20 to win $130 (since +650 means a $100 stake wins $650, so $20 wins $20 × 6.5 = $130).
- If regulation ends tied and the teams play a 15-minute OT period, you win $130 profit, total return $150.
- Kelce’s catch total is irrelevant here — this bet only tracks whether the score is tied after 60 minutes.
Combined, you’ve risked $140 across two bets. If both hit — Kelce goes over and the game reaches overtime — your combined profit is $230 on that $140 outlay. If only the Kelce prop hits and the game ends in regulation, you’re up $100 on that leg and down $20 on the OT leg, net +$80. Notice the two bets settle on completely independent triggers: one is read off Kelce’s final stat line, the other off the scoreboard clock. That independence is the whole point of separating “player prop” from “game prop” as categories — they’re graded from different data sources within the same game, which is also why combining them into a same-game parlay requires the book to account for correlation rather than just multiplying the two prices together.

- Line movement tells you different things: sharp money on a player prop usually signals inside information on snaps, role, or a late injury designation, while sharp money on a game prop like total touchdowns or overtime usually reflects weather or pace expectations — read the steam accordingly.
